Monotub Method: The Complete Guide

The monotub method is the standard way home growers scale up from a single bag to real bulk harvests. It's not complicated, but getting the setup right makes the difference between a mediocre flush and a genuinely impressive one.

What a monotub actually is

A monotub is a large, opaque plastic storage tub, modified with air holes (usually covered with micropore tape or filter patches) to allow gas exchange while keeping contaminants and pests out. Bulk substrate goes in, spawn is mixed through it, and the whole tub becomes the fruiting chamber.

Why monotubs outperform bags

Surface area. A tub gives mycelium a wide, shallow area to colonise and fruit across, rather than the narrower shape of a bag. That translates directly into bigger, more frequent flushes from the same overall substrate volume.

Setting one up

Our Monotub Complete Mushroom Grow Kit comes with the tub and the core components needed to get started. You'll be mixing spawn (grain colonised with mycelium) through a bulk substrate such as our sterilised CVG bulk substrate, a coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum blend that holds moisture well without waterlogging.

Ratio guidance: roughly one part spawn to two or three parts bulk substrate is a reasonable starting point for most gourmet species. Mix thoroughly so spawn is distributed evenly rather than clumped.

Colonisation in a tub

Keep the lid mostly closed during colonisation to maintain humidity and warmth, cracking it slightly if condensation builds up excessively. Full colonisation across a tub typically takes longer than a single bag, often three to four weeks, because there's more substrate to work through.

Fruiting conditions

Once colonised, fruiting needs fresh air exchange (fanning the tub daily) and high humidity (regular light misting). This is where a grow tent earns its keep, it holds humidity and filtered fresh air far more consistently than an open room, which usually means faster pinning and better-formed fruits.

Common monotub problems

Contamination usually traces back to substrate that wasn't fully sterilised or a tub that wasn't clean before filling. Slow colonisation is most often a temperature issue, tubs kept in cool rooms colonise noticeably slower. Aborted pins (small pins that stall and die) usually mean insufficient fresh air exchange.

Refilling and reusing

Once a tub is spent, it can be cleaned and refilled. Buying grain spawn pellets and bulk substrate separately works out cheaper per harvest than a new kit each time, once you're confident with the process.
