Grow Your Own Mushrooms at Home: A Beginner's Guide

Growing mushrooms at home looks intimidating from the outside, sterile technique, Latin species names, humidity percentages, but the actual hands-on process is genuinely beginner-friendly if you start with the right kit. Here's the honest, no-jargon version of what to expect.

Before you buy anything

Decide where the kit will live. You need a spot out of direct sunlight, away from temperature swings (not next to a radiator or a draughty window), ideally 70-78°F. A cupboard, spare room shelf, or utility room usually works well.

Your first kit

Week by week, roughly

Days 1-10: nothing visible happens. This is normal. The mycelium is establishing itself inside the substrate.

Days 10-20: white, thread-like growth becomes visible and starts spreading through the bag. Mix the bag gently around day 10 and again around day 15 to help it spread evenly.

Weeks 3-4: the substrate turns fully white. This is full colonisation, and it's your cue to introduce the bag to light and fresh air to trigger fruiting.

Days after that: small pins appear within days, then grow rapidly into mature mushrooms, usually ready to harvest within a week of pinning.

The most common beginner mistakes

Overwatering or misting too aggressively, most inject-and-forget systems need far less intervention than people expect. Opening the bag too early, before full colonisation, which invites contamination. And impatience with temperature, cold spots slow colonisation dramatically, so a consistent warm location matters more than almost any other variable.
