How Mushroom Grow Kits Work

A mushroom grow kit is a shortcut. It takes the hardest parts of mushroom cultivation, sterilising a growing medium and getting mycelium established in it without contamination, and does them for you before the kit ever reaches your door. What's left for you to do is the easy, satisfying part: keeping the mycelium happy while it colonises, then giving it the conditions to fruit.

What's actually inside a kit

Most kits are built around one of two things: a bag of sterilised substrate (grain, straw, or a wood-based mix) or a ready-to-fruit block that's already colonised. Fruiting comes second. Once the substrate is fully colonised, introducing it to light and fresh air triggers pinning, then rapid growth into mature mushrooms. Most kits fruit within a week or two of this stage starting.
